Synopsis
Set in an affluent suburb of Montgomery, Alabama, “The Woman I Am Today” chronicles a weekend in the life of Mona Walker, a widowed, well-established, fortyish, R&B singer from the early 90s, who lives well off her career’s former success, but still longs for a current place in the music spotlight. As her circle of friends gather for a slumber party, welcoming her back from a three-month extreme makeover, her world filled with love, laughter, lust, and luxury is revealed. Mona is surrounded by her younger sister, Vanessa, a twenty-something, talented but undiscovered singer, whose journey to healing and rise-to-the-top becomes apparent; her best friend, a music industry diva in her own right, is the humorously entertaining Davina, an often tipsy but multi-talented wife and mother, who searches for truth in her own life.
The demure but devastatingly beautiful, young fashion stylist, Lynn, rounds out the quartet of friends. This hopeless romantic inches down the path of love and loss as she learns the lesson of the importance of faith, family, and friendship. Mona’s mentor and mother figure, aging, former R & B superstar Lady Loreale Royale, causes much mayhem and madness as her visit to the mansion conflicts with the mini reunion of virtually inseparable friends and the twists and turns that are ahead for them.
As you navigate through the careers, family and romances of these successful women, you are introduced to the equally strong and successful men that surround them: the sexy singer/songwriter Marcus Jackson, a young, talented artist on the rise; the handsome and poised Pastor William Deon Hill, a blast from Mona’s past; and her son, Isaiah, a college freshman and well-known spoken word artist, searching for his own voice as a young man.
This story of sisterhood drives you down a road filled with music and song, comedy and drama, and emotion and excitement, all told in a manner that reveals the inner workings of multi-faceted characters, whose relationships intertwine and complement one another. Their struggles and eventual triumphs make you leave the theatre cheering for each character’s victories, which they accomplish by working through their flaws, weaknesses, and challenges. In the course of two hours, the audience is on a roller coaster ride of tears – caused by both emotion and laughter, and plot twists that will take you to the edge of your seat, all while experiencing the dynamic voices of the superbly talented cast of actor/singers, and brilliantly composed original music. The vibrant and visually stimulating set will further draw you into a world of affluence, adventure, and ambition, told through an array of characters, each with a story that relates to the many tragedies and triumphs of our everyday lives.
